Borongan, Eastern Samar

Profile and Area of Focus

Borongan City, the capital city of Eastern Samar, is a 1st class city, located along the middle coastal part of the province. Composed of 61 barangays that are mostly rural and agricultural, its poverty incidence is a high 32.3% (2015). Most of its poor are rice farmers and capture fishers.

This is a city that lies along the pathway of typhoons that pass the country on an average of 20 times a year. But it refuses to bow down to the ravages of storms and impacts of poverty. Its development project called Dukwag Agrikultura aims to develop agriculture by boosting production and building resilience of its poor farmers and fishers.

Data on the socio-economic profile of the city’s farmers and fishers will be generated and consolidated, including data on their production environment, output, and level of productivity, including their health status and other relevant information. Data will be used to identify the support that is needed, to develop new programs and projects, and to measure the impacts on agricultural production.

Hands on in this endeavor is a local coalition that includes CSOs, academe, and local business organizations.
